    Barchester Staff Handbook

I worked at this home for the past 8 years, when I first started I loved it, as the years have gone on the clients have become more challenging but we have the same amount of staff for more residents. We have had numerous managers and no one stays, the staff turn over is ridiculous, we are payed minimum wage and get attacked on a daily basis.

Barchester Healthcare is one of the UK's most respected care home companies, providing award winning care and services to thousands of residents throughout the UK. Barchester has a true passion to deliver the best for residents. This passion is shown in Vision, Mission and Values as well as through the actions of staff on a daily basis.

We have numerous complaints from family members and management but then we are always short staffed so can’t do our jobs properly. At times the domestic manager has forgotten to buy wipes and gloves so we have to buy our own.

Don’t work for barchester they are a disgrace. Where to start, advertised on this website states “£9.50 an hour” not “up too” so therefore the wage should be as advertised, this is a lie to intise you into this company, in fact you will be put on minimum wage and be expected to do the job of about 3 people just to yourself. You will never be aloud your legal allocated amount of time for your breaks, then when you ask about it they will do nothing. You are 98% of the time understaffed.

The residents are lovely, but apart from that there is nothing else. If you want to be a carer on minimum wage for the rest of your life then please come along and apply, but if you would like opportunities to progress and to earn qualifications then please don’t pick this company. You will be asking and asking and you will get nowhere. Barchesters carers are so undervalued by the company, and the amount they put up with and do for these residents is amazing and they deserve more than minimum wage. No matter how hard you work and how much you do, management will always look at the carers as underqualifed and meaningless to the company. I worked at The Fernes, and it has to be the worse place i have ever worked in. The bullying culture is so bad it puts the Devil to shame.

When i worked there, everyone spoke about everyone behind their back, management had favourites, and certain staff got away with talking to you like you are worthless. Even the residents are treated like numbers, and not people. The whole Barchester ethos is to market homes to look good, when they are actually one of the most poorest care companies when it actually comes down to person centred care. I left and got a job at a new care home, which is a lifesaver as never felt so welcomed and a wanted team member unlike Barchester.

But some staff there need to be sacked, their attitude is appalling and there is no caring bone in their body. It actually made me sick. Every complaint is swept under the rug, and it shouldn’t be because some things need sorting. All the people at my care home will never work there as I have warned them all and more about how this place has its snakes to ruin your life.

December 20, 2018 Providing the highest levels of care and support is what our success has been built on, so it’s incredibly disappointing to hear that you felt this was lacking when you worked here. We never want our people to feel uncomfortable or isolated, and we invest heavily in training for our managers. Whilst we don’t think your experience is common at Barchester, if it’s happening anywhere, it is unacceptable. Android game apps free download. December 3, 2018 Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about Barchester. We’re always looking at how we can improve, which is one of the reasons why we run an annual employee survey. The 2017 results show we’re moving in the right direction, with 80% of people telling us they’re happy with our culture and 84% revealing that they would recommend a Barchester care home to someone they love.

October 19, 2018 Our focus is always on delivering the very best care to our residents and patients, and we work hard to get our staffing levels right. Sometimes, things might be more pressurised because of circumstances beyond our control (although we try to plan for the unexpected too), but we would never want anyone to feel overworked on a day-to-day basis. We’re really sorry that you felt that way when you worked here.

We’d love to know more about what you feel could be improved – please email us, in confidence, at onlinefeedback@barchester.com. I have worked for Barchester for many years and have had the ability to progress from a activities co-ordinator to a carer, a nurse, a nurse manager and now a deputy manager. In this time I have also managed to marry and raise two children. I cannot praise Barchester enough for the support or my managers for making it possible to have a work life balance. I have had the opportunity to progress in my career and also be there for my children.

June 7, 2018 Delivering exceptional person-centred care and support is always our focus – and always will be. We do need to make a profit, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to invest in our services and staff, but we’re certainly not an organisation that puts profit over people. We’d really appreciate getting more details about your concerns over the levels of care and support where you were working.
